Social Impacts

The Haenyeo Mural Painting Project aims to raise awareness about Jeju's marine environment and help preserve Haenyeo culture through a mural, done in partnership with the Korea Coast Guard.

On December 13, our team of 10 students headed to the Waste Oil Storage Facility in Shindori as part of the Let's Run SEA (Save, Engage, Act) campaign. We cleaned out the storage tanks, sketched out a mural design, and painted a collaborative piece celebrating Haenyeo culture and environmental sustainability.

As the project organizer, I planned and coordinated the mural painting project. I worked with two other student leaders to develop the mural's concept around Haenyeo, Jeju, the ocean, sustainability, and coexistence. I also organized the artist recruitment process by creating promotional posters, designing application forms, and selecting artists.

Once they were chosen, I ran brainstorming sessions with them to help shape a strong mural sketch. Additionally, I recruited student volunteers by reaching out to my peers and communicating the purpose of the project. I also collaborated with student leaders to lock down the schedule and logistics.

This project taught me a lot about what it takes to make a real impact in a community. Working alongside student members and community partners showed me how far careful planning and real teamwork can go in turning an idea into something tangible. More importantly, I realized that public art can inspire environmental awareness and encourage people to preserve both Jeju's marine environment and honor the cultural legacy of Haenyeo.
