National: Second place, Seoul rehab AI Chatbot Idea Hackathon (out of 168 teams)

I was awarded Second Place in the Seoul Rehabilitation Hospital AI Idea Contest, competing against 97 teams and 168 participants. The competition challenged participants to develop innovative AI chatbot solutions that improve the lives of patients with various medical conditions. Our team proposed an AI chatbot designed to support Alzheimer's patients and ease the burden on both patients and their caregivers.


To better understand the problem, I researched the challenges faced by individuals living with Alzheimer's disease. I learned that as the global population ages, more people are living with the condition. Drawing from my own observations of my grandfather's experience with Alzheimer's, I recognized that memory loss often leads patients to repeatedly ask caregivers the same questions, creating emotional and physical strain for both sides. This inspired our team to design a chatbot that could provide comfort and reassurance to patients while easing the load on caregivers. The chatbot could remind patients to take their medication and provide caregivers with summaries of the patients' daily interactions.




After advancing to the second round, our team developed a database of pre-set caregiver responses, including medication schedules, meal reminders, and health-check questions, to deliver personalized assistance. Building on concepts I learned in computer science, I integrated the Microsoft Copilot API to power the AI conversations.



For the final presentation, I put together a demo recording of the chatbot and presented our solution to a panel of judges that included the Chief of Seoul Rehabilitation Hospital, the Chairman of UNIST, and executives from BrainImpact. To demonstrate the real-world need for the chatbot, we opened our presentation by reenacting the communication challenges my grandfather and father experience because of Alzheimer's disease.





Our project received positive recognition from doctors and medical professionals at Seoul Rehabilitation Hospital and was supported by organizations including Microsoft, DEX Consulting, and the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST). Through this experience, I gained hands-on experience designing a user-centered AI chatbot with Microsoft Copilot Studio and learned how technology can address real-world challenges.
